Carotid Artery Screening

There are two carotid arteries, left and right. They bring oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the neck and brain. Impaired carotid artery function can result in stroke. There are often no symptoms in the early stages of disease.

Sometimes conditions called transient ischemic attacks, TIAs, are early warning signals of stroke. TIA symptoms may include tingling or numbness in one part (e.g., an arm or leg) or side of the body, inability to speak clearly, inability to control the movement of one of your limbs, or even losing sight in one eye. Such symptoms may disappear quickly, but the warnings should be heeded – contact your physician immediately.

Ultrasound scanning of the carotid arteries can provide early warning of potential TIA and/or stroke conditions.
